Circular cavity resonator
- A circular cavity resonator is a piece of circular waveguide shorted at both ends by metal plate.
- In figure a circular cavity resonator is shown whose length is d and cross sectional radius is a.
- Here Z is longitudinal direction, and X and Y are transverse direction.
- Here ρ and φ are transverse.
- Since at z = 0 and z = d, we have conductor, so cavity resonator is closed from all the sides.
- For TE mode, p ≠ 0, so p = 1, 2, 3, …
- Therefore TE111 is the dominant mode for TE mode.
- For TM mode, p = 0, 1, 2, 3, …
- So TE010 is the dominant mode for TM mode.
Quality factor
- The longitudinal component of electric field is zero, Ez = 0
- For TE mode, p ≠ 0, otherwise Hz = 0
- So TE101 is the dominant mode.
